When I open a contact, why do I see a list of other contacts on the left?

This is a shortcut for working through a list. When you open a contact from a list, a grouped list or a pipeline stage, the left side keeps showing everyone else in that list, for example everybody in the same group or the same pipeline stage. You can go down the list and click the next contact without going back.
